Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, can effectively reduce the appearance of certain discolorations on the face. These include age spots, freckles, liver spots, and injury scars. Some of the more advanced equipment used in this treatment combines light frequencies with radiofrequency (RF) waves. The resulting evenness in skin tone can be quite remarkable. The reason the FotoFacial RF® treatment is so effective is because the medical professional performing the therapy has complete control over how much energy to use, the proper wavelengths, and the length of each energy burst.
Candidates for FotoFacial RF® Treatments
FotoFacial RF® treatment was developed to aid in the minimizing of the appearance of freckles and age spots. These discolorations aren’t too deep, with most of the darkened cells existing in the skin layers. Those individuals who have pronounced, melanin-rich age spots on the face are the best candidates for this type of treatment. We encourage you to set up a consultation with us so that we can determine whether realistic outcome expectations can be met using this type of cosmetic treatment.
How the Treatment is Performed
We first apply a topical gel to the skin surface. This reduces the chance of energy waves being deflected from the skin and also helps keep the skin surface moist and comfortable during the procedure. The instrument is then pressed against the skin and the lamp is flashed for a few milliseconds.
After a series of bursts, the instrument is moved to the next area where an age spot is located. Each burst of energy travels right through the skin and is absorbed only by the darker, denser material that makes up the freckle or age spot.
There’s no downtime for the client. Normal activities can be resumed at once. The affected tissue will eventually be replaced with new skin. The new skin growth will be healthier than what it is replacing, so the appearance of the spot is dramatically reduced. In some cases, we will schedule a series of treatment sessions, spaced apart by a short healing period.
Advantages of FotoFacial RF® Treatments
When IPL is combined with RF technology, only the targeted tissue is affected. This means the adjacent skin isn’t affected, something that happens when other treatments are performed. There’s virtually no risk of bleaching or discoloration with FotoFacial RF® treatments.
